02The Client

Maciej runs HandyMack, a handyman and building business in Kingston. He has been on the tools for thirty-odd years and his work is properly good, so this was a fun one to get stuck into.

03The Problem

His old WordPress site was not doing anything for him. It sat there, it looked dated, and it was slow. But the website itself was only half the problem.

Tradespeople get buried in junk enquiries and SEO spam. Somewhere in that pile are the real customers, and those sometimes go cold simply because nobody replied fast enough. A good handyman is up a ladder or under a floor all day, not sitting at a laptop refreshing an inbox. Jobs get lost to whoever answered first.

04What We Built

We started over with a clean, quick site. The part we actually wanted to solve, though, was what happens after someone messages him. So we put a small pipeline behind the contact form:

AI spam filter

Every message gets read by an AI filter first. If it is spam or a time-waster, it gets dropped, and Maciej never sees it.

Instant delivery

Real enquiries go straight to his inbox, with nothing standing between a genuine customer and him.

Automatic follow-up

Fifteen minutes later, the customer gets an email back from him, using their name, asking for a few photos of the job, the address, and when they are free that week, so he can show up and quote properly.

The site is built in Next.js with the spam filtering and follow-up emails wired in behind the form, and it runs on Docker and Coolify.

05The Outcome

Maciej does not have to touch any of it. Someone messages on a Tuesday afternoon while he is up a ladder, and by the time he is down, they have already had a reply. The customer feels looked after, and he walks into every quote already knowing what the job is, where it is, and when he can see it.

The stack is not the point. The point is that a one-man business stops losing jobs to a slow inbox, without changing how he works.
