Oxford Brookes University is behind CAVEPET, a project exploring how immersive technology can help people with diabetes understand and manage their condition. We came on board to build and demo the immersive side of it.
Diabetes is a condition people have to live with and manage every day, and a leaflet or a slideshow only goes so far in explaining it. Immersive environments can show rather than tell, but only if someone actually builds the experience, and builds it for the hardware the project has.
That meant two very different targets: a CAVE, a room-scale environment where the walls themselves are the display, and the Meta Quest 3, a headset you can hand to anyone, anywhere.
We built and ran demos of the patient education tool across both:
CAVE demo
The tool running in a Cave Automatic Virtual Environment, where a patient steps into a room and the experience surrounds them, no headset required.
Meta Quest 3
The same experience on a standalone consumer headset, so it can travel: demos are no longer tied to the room the CAVE lives in.
Built for PPI
The demos feed into the project’s patient and public involvement work, so the people the tool is actually for get to experience it and shape where it goes.
CAVEPET has a working, demonstrable experience on both room-scale and portable hardware, and something concrete to put in front of patients rather than a concept on a slide.
For us, it is also the kind of work we love: immersive technology applied to something that matters.
